Sayyid dynasty

from 1414 to 1451

The Sayyid dynasty was the fourth ruling dynasty of the Delhi Sultanate. Its founder, Khizr Khan, had been appointed governor of Multan and Lahore by the conqueror Timur, who sacked Delhi in 1398 and left the sultanate in disarray. Khizr Khan took Delhi and ruled in the name of Timur's successors, never taking the title of sultan, and the dynasty claimed descent from the Prophet Muhammad, as the name Sayyid implies. The Sayyid rulers controlled little more than the area around Delhi and faced constant rebellion from provincial governors and Hindu chiefs. The last Sayyid ruler, Alam Shah, withdrew voluntarily, and power passed to Bahlul Lodi, founder of the Lodi dynasty.
