Joan of Arc was born in 1412 in Domrémy-la-Pucelle. A French peasant girl, Joan of Arc said that she had heard voices of saints telling her to help Charles VII regain his kingdom during the Hundred Years' War. Given a small command, she helped to lift the English siege of Orléans in 1429 and led the army to victories that enabled Charles to be crowned at Reims. She was captured by Burgundians at Compiègne in 1430, handed to the English and tried for heresy by a church court at Rouen, which condemned her to burn at the stake. A retrial in 1456 declared her innocent, and she was canonised in 1920. She is a national heroine of France.
