Saffarid dynasty

from 861 CE to 1003

The Saffarid dynasty was a Persian Muslim dynasty founded in Sistan in eastern Iran by Ya'qub ibn al-Layth al-Saffar, a coppersmith who rose through the ranks of a local militia. He conquered large areas of eastern Iran, Afghanistan and Fars, and threatened the Abbasid caliphate in Baghdad, though he was beaten near the capital. His brother Amr ibn al-Layth later lost a major battle to the Samanids and was captured. The Saffarids are remembered as among the first rulers to revive Persian as a language of court and poetry after the Arab conquest. The dynasty survived as local rulers of Sistan under Samanid and then Ghaznavid overlordship, until the Ghaznavids ended it.
