Rurikids

from 862 CE to 1598

The Rurikids were the ruling dynasty of Kievan Rus' and its successor states, and later of the Grand Duchy of Moscow and the Tsardom of Russia. According to the Primary Chronicle, the founding ancestor, Rurik, was a Varangian chieftain invited by the peoples of the north to rule over them at Novgorod, although historians debate how far the story is accurate. His descendants ruled from Kyiv and in many other principalities, and the Moscow branch gradually gathered the Russian lands. Ivan the Terrible was crowned the first tsar in 1547. The dynasty died out with Feodor I, which led to the Time of Troubles, before the Romanovs took the throne in 1613.
