Rise of White Rose

from June 1942 to February 1943

The White Rose was a non-violent resistance group in Nazi Germany, formed in Munich in 1942 by students including Hans and Sophie Scholl, Alexander Schmorell, Willi Graf and Christoph Probst, together with their professor Kurt Huber. They wrote and distributed leaflets denouncing the Nazi regime and its crimes, and called on Germans to resist, and they painted anti-Nazi slogans on walls. In February 1943 Hans and Sophie Scholl were arrested after throwing leaflets in the atrium of Munich University, and they were tried by the People's Court and executed within days. Other members, including Huber, were later put to death as well. Copies of the last leaflet were smuggled out of Germany and dropped over German cities by Allied aircraft, and the group's courage has made it a symbol of moral resistance.
