Case Blue, known in German as Fall Blau, was the German summer offensive of 1942 on the Eastern Front, aimed at seizing the oil fields of the Caucasus and cutting Soviet access to the Volga. Army Group South was divided into Army Groups A and B, with the first advancing into the Caucasus and the second toward the Don and the city of Stalingrad. The Germans made rapid early progress, but their supply lines were overextended, and their flanks were held by weaker Romanian, Italian and Hungarian armies. Fighting around Stalingrad became a long and costly battle in the ruins. A Soviet counter-offensive in November 1942 encircled the German Sixth Army, and Case Blue ended in a major strategic failure.
