Rise of Slow Food

1986

Slow Food is an international movement that began in Italy as a protest against fast food and the loss of traditional food culture. It was started by the journalist Carlo Petrini in the town of Bra in Piedmont, and gained attention after a protest against the opening of a McDonald's restaurant near the Spanish Steps in Rome. A manifesto was signed in Paris in 1989, which made it an international association. The movement promotes local and traditional cuisine, sustainable farming and the protection of food biodiversity, and runs projects such as the Ark of Taste, which catalogues endangered foods. It organises events including the biennial Salone del Gusto and Terra Madre in Turin.
