Construction of Faisal Mosque

1986

The Faisal Mosque in Islamabad is the largest mosque in Pakistan and one of the largest in the world. It is named after King Faisal of Saudi Arabia, who supported its construction, and was designed by the Turkish architect Vedat Dalokay, who chose a modern form rather than the traditional domes: the main hall is shaped like a Bedouin tent, with four slender minarets rising at its corners. It was completed in 1986 after a design competition and several years of building. The mosque stands at the foot of the Margalla Hills and can be seen from much of the capital. It can accommodate a vast number of worshippers in the main hall and its courtyards.
