Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was the first full-length cel-animated feature film, produced by Walt Disney and released through RKO. Based on the fairy tale collected by the Brothers Grimm, it tells of a princess who is hunted by her jealous stepmother, the Queen, and finds shelter with seven dwarfs in a forest cottage. Its production was expensive, and industry insiders mocked it as Disney's Folly before its release. The film was an enormous success and became the highest-grossing sound film to that date. It established the feature-length animated film as a form, and it earned Disney an honorary Academy Award.
