Release of Pinocchio

23 February 1940

Pinocchio is the second animated feature produced by Walt Disney, following Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. It is based on the Italian novel The Adventures of Pinocchio by Carlo Collodi, about a wooden puppet carved by the woodcarver Geppetto and brought to life by the Blue Fairy. Guided by his conscience, Jiminy Cricket, Pinocchio must prove himself brave, truthful and unselfish in order to become a real boy. The film is admired for its detailed animation, and it won two Academy Awards, for Best Original Score and for the song When You Wish Upon a Star. It was a financial disappointment on its first release, partly because the Second World War had closed European markets, but it later earned great acclaim.
