Construction of Dublin Airport

19 January 1940

Dublin Airport is the main airport of the Republic of Ireland, located north of Dublin near Swords. It opened as the country's first purpose-built civil airport, with a service to Liverpool operated by the national carrier Aer Lingus, replacing the earlier flights from Baldonnel. Its early terminal was a landmark of modernist design. The airport grew with transatlantic services, and in 1986 it became the first in Europe to offer United States border pre-clearance. It is the home base of Aer Lingus and Ryanair, and a second runway opened in 2022 to meet rising passenger numbers. It remains among the busiest airports in the British Isles.
