Release of Google Chrome

2 September 2008

Google Chrome is a web browser released by Google in September 2008, first as a beta version for Windows. It introduced a fast JavaScript engine called V8, a minimal interface, and a design that ran each tab as a separate process so that a crash in one page did not take down the whole browser. Google presented the project with a comic book by Scott McCloud. The code was released as the open-source Chromium project, which has since been used by many other browsers. Chrome grew quickly and became the most widely used browser in the world within a few years, overtaking Internet Explorer. It was originally based on the WebKit engine, and in 2013 Google switched to its own fork, called Blink.
