Discovery of Aegaeon

15 August 2008

Aegaeon is a tiny moon of Saturn, only about half a kilometer across, found in images taken by the Cassini spacecraft in 2008. It orbits within a bright arc of material in Saturn's G ring, and is one of the small moons that are embedded in the faint rings and are thought to shed dust that feeds them. It was named after Aegaeon, one of the hundred-handed giants of Greek mythology, also known as Briareus. Its discovery added to the picture of how the rings and small moons of Saturn interact.
