Origins of Kontinental Hockey League

2008

The Kontinental Hockey League, or KHL, is a professional ice hockey league founded in 2008 as the successor to the Russian Superleague, with the aim of creating a strong international league in Eurasia. It was backed by the Russian government and by large companies, and its first season included teams from Russia and also from Belarus, Kazakhstan, Latvia and Ukraine. Clubs later joined from countries such as Finland, Slovakia, China and Croatia, though several left, especially after the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022. The champion is awarded the Gagarin Cup, named after the first man in space, Yuri Gagarin. The KHL is generally regarded as the second-strongest league in the world after the National Hockey League.
