Release of Blogger

23 August 1999

Blogger is a blog-publishing service launched by Pyra Labs, a San Francisco company founded by Evan Williams and Meg Hourihan, and it was one of the first widely used tools for creating weblogs. Users could post to their own website from a simple web form without needing to know HTML or run a server, which helped popularize blogging among ordinary people. Google acquired Pyra in 2003, and Blogger was later integrated with Google accounts, hosted on the blogspot domain. Evan Williams left Google after the acquisition and later co-founded Twitter. Although newer social platforms drew away much of its audience, Blogger has remained active, and its simplicity made it influential in the early history of the web.
