Release of Armenian Wikipedia

February 2005

The Armenian Wikipedia is the Armenian-language edition of the free online encyclopedia, written mostly in Eastern Armenian, the standard used in Armenia, with some contributors from the diaspora using Western Armenian. The Armenian script was created in the early fifth century by the scholar Mesrop Mashtots, and the language has a very long literary tradition. The edition was started in the mid-2000s and has since grown through the work of volunteers in Armenia and abroad. It has become an important place for online knowledge in Armenian, covering history, culture and science, and for preserving material in a language spoken by a community scattered across the world.
