Release of Google Maps

8 February 2005

Google Maps is a web-based mapping service launched by Google as a browser application with scrollable, zoomable maps, driving directions and local business search. It grew from technology the company acquired in 2004, including a mapping start-up founded by Lars and Jens Rasmussen and the satellite imagery company Keyhole. Its release was followed within months by the opening of its programming interface, which allowed outside websites to embed maps and led to a wave of new web applications. Later additions included Street View, mobile apps with turn-by-turn navigation and real-time traffic. It became one of the most widely used navigation and location tools in the world.
