Launch of The Times

1 January 1785

The Times is a British daily newspaper based in London, which began as The Daily Universal Register and was renamed The Times a few years later. Its founder John Walter hoped to build a business on printing and advertising. The paper became known for its reporting, such as William Howard Russell's dispatches from the Crimean War, and for its influence on politics, and it was long regarded as Britain's newspaper of record. In 1981 it was bought by Rupert Murdoch's News International, which also owns its sister paper The Sunday Times. It switched from the broadsheet to a compact format in 2004, and it now has a large digital readership as well as its printed edition.
