Publication of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer

1876

The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is a novel by Mark Twain about a mischievous boy growing up in the fictional Mississippi River town of St. Petersburg, modelled on Twain's own boyhood home of Hannibal, Missouri. It follows Tom's escapades with his friends, including the outcast Huckleberry Finn, his love for Becky Thatcher, and the night he and Huck witness a murder in a graveyard by Injun Joe. Twain drew on his own memories and on stories from childhood, and he combined humour with sharp observation of small-town life. The book was published first in England and then in the United States, and it became one of the best-loved American novels. Twain followed it with Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.
