Jack London was born on 12 January 1876 in San Francisco. An American writer, London grew up in poverty in the San Francisco Bay Area and worked as an oyster pirate, sailor and laborer before becoming a writer. His experiences in the Klondike Gold Rush supplied material for stories and novels such as The Call of the Wild, White Fang and To Build a Fire. He also wrote the socialist dystopian novel The Iron Heel, the autobiographical Martin Eden and the memoir The Road, and was among the first authors to earn a fortune from his pen. He was a committed socialist and reporter who covered the Russo-Japanese War.
