Founding of Johns Hopkins University

1876

Johns Hopkins University is a private research university in Baltimore, Maryland, funded by a large bequest from the Quaker merchant and philanthropist Johns Hopkins. Under its first president, Daniel Coit Gilman, it was modelled on German universities and put an emphasis on graduate education and research, and it is often described as the first research university in the United States. Its hospital and medical school, which opened in the late nineteenth century, introduced a new style of medical training with bedside teaching, and attracted physicians such as William Osler and William Halsted. The university has since become known for medicine, public health, international studies and applied physics, and it spends more on research than most other US universities.
