Mer Hayrenik, meaning Our Fatherland, is the national anthem of Armenia. Its text is a poem by the Armenian writer Mikael Nalbandian, written in the nineteenth century, and its music is a melody composed by Barsegh Kanachyan, an Armenian choir director and composer. The song was adopted as the anthem of the first Republic of Armenia in 1918, when the country briefly became independent after the First World War. It was replaced during the Soviet period, when Armenia was a Soviet republic, and it was restored when Armenia regained independence in 1991. It is sung at official events and in the Armenian diaspora.
