Publication of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

1998

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets is the second novel in J. K. Rowling's series, published by Bloomsbury in 1998. In his second year at Hogwarts, Harry hears a mysterious voice and learns that the legendary Chamber of Secrets has been opened, and students are being petrified. The story involves the diary of a former student, Tom Riddle, a giant basilisk and the house-elf Dobby. The novel deepens the history of the wizarding world and develops the series' themes of prejudice and the nature of blood status. It was a commercial and critical success like its predecessor, won several awards and was adapted into a film in 2002.
