Creation of PL/I

1964

PL/I is a programming language developed by IBM in the 1960s with the aim of combining the strengths of languages used for scientific work, such as FORTRAN, business data processing, such as COBOL, and ideas from ALGOL. It was designed to run on the IBM System/360 family of computers and was meant to serve all kinds of programmers, which gave it a very large set of features. This also made it complicated and difficult to implement. It introduced ideas such as exception handling and some features of concurrent programming. PL/I was used for many commercial systems, and it was the language in which the Multics operating system was written. Its use declined over time, but it is still used on mainframes.
