A Journey to the Centre of the Earth is a science fiction adventure novel by the French writer Jules Verne, part of his series of Voyages Extraordinaires. It tells how the German professor Otto Lidenbrock, his nephew Axel and the Icelandic guide Hans descend into an extinct volcano in Iceland, after deciphering a coded message from a sixteenth-century alchemist. Underground they find an immense cavern with a sea and prehistoric plants and animals. The novel mixes real scientific ideas of the time, such as geology and palaeontology, with imagination, though the idea of a hollow Earth is false. It has been adapted many times, and remains among Verne's most popular works.
