The Paraguayan War, also called the War of the Triple Alliance, was the deadliest conflict in the history of South America. It began when the Paraguayan leader Francisco Solano López, who sought a greater regional role, went to war with Brazil and then invaded Argentina, after Brazil intervened in Uruguay. Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay then formed the Triple Alliance against Paraguay. After years of grinding campaigns, the allies occupied Asunción in 1869, and the war ended with López's death in battle in March 1870. Paraguay suffered catastrophic losses, with a large part of its population dead and some of its territory ceded.
