Prague offensive

from 6 May 1945 to 11 May 1945

The Prague offensive was the last major military operation of the Second World War in Europe, in which Soviet forces, together with Romanian, Polish and Czechoslovak units, attacked the German Army Group Centre in Bohemia and Moravia. It came as the people of Prague rose against the German occupiers, and the insurgents asked the Allies for help. Units of the Russian Liberation Army, a collaborationist force under General Vlasov, changed sides and helped the rebels briefly. Soviet tank armies advanced from several directions, and reached the city, which had already been largely freed by the insurgents, as German forces were ordered to withdraw westward. Fighting went on for a few days after the general German surrender.
