People Power Revolution

from 22 February 1986 to 25 February 1986

The People Power Revolution, also known as the EDSA Revolution, was a series of mass demonstrations in the Philippines that ended the dictatorship of Ferdinand Marcos. After Marcos called a snap election, and the official count declared him the winner despite widespread allegations of fraud, the opposition candidate Corazon Aquino, widow of the assassinated senator Benigno Aquino Jr, claimed victory. A mutiny by Defence Minister Juan Ponce Enrile and General Fidel Ramos was supported by hundreds of thousands of civilians, including nuns and priests, who gathered on Epifanio de los Santos Avenue in Manila to block the loyalist troops. After several days Marcos left the country for Hawaii, and Aquino was sworn in as president. The revolution inspired later peaceful movements.
