Founding of Pixar

3 February 1986

Pixar is an American computer animation studio in Emeryville, California, which began as the computer division of Lucasfilm. It was sold to Steve Jobs, who became its main investor, and the group was led by Ed Catmull and Alvy Ray Smith, pioneers of computer graphics. After making short films, including Luxo Jr., the studio produced Toy Story, the first feature film made entirely with computer animation, in partnership with Disney. Pixar went on to make many hits, such as Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, Up and WALL-E, and its films won numerous Academy Awards. It was bought by Disney, with Jobs becoming Disney's largest individual shareholder.
