Release of Vim

2 November 1991

Vim is a free text editor that grew out of Vi, the editor from early Unix systems. It was created by the Dutch programmer Bram Moolenaar, who first made a version for the Amiga computer and released it as an imitation of Vi. It was later renamed Vi IMproved as it gained features such as multiple undo, syntax highlighting, plugins and scripting. Vim keeps the modal editing style of Vi, in which keys perform different actions depending on the mode, which gives experienced users fast, keyboard-only control. It is distributed as charityware, with users encouraged to donate to a children's charity in Uganda. After Moolenaar's death in 2023, the project continued under community maintainers.
