Origins of Berlin Marathon

1974

The Berlin Marathon is a long-distance road race held each September on a flat, fast course through the German capital. The first edition, run in the mid-1970s, was small and took place on paths near the Grunewald forest in West Berlin. After the fall of the Berlin Wall the course was opened to run through the centre of the city, passing the Brandenburg Gate, and the race became one of the six World Marathon Majors. The Berlin course has seen more men's world records than any other marathon, with several runners from Kenya and Ethiopia setting the fastest times there.
