Banteay Srei is a Hindu temple dedicated to Shiva, located in the Angkor region of Cambodia, about twenty kilometres from the main temples. It was not built by a king but by Yajnavaraha, a Brahmin counsellor of Rajendravarman II and Jayavarman V, which is unusual among the monuments of the area. The temple is small but famous for the quality of its carving in pink sandstone, with intricate relief scenes from Hindu epics, and for its delicate decoration. Its name means citadel of women or citadel of beauty. French scholars rediscovered it in the early twentieth century, and in 1923 the French writer Andre Malraux was arrested for trying to remove statues from it.
