Founding of Kingdom of Denmark

965 CE

The Kingdom of Denmark is traditionally traced back to the Viking king Harald Bluetooth, who is said to have united the Danes and brought Christianity to the country in the middle of the tenth century. The date of 965 is often linked to the king's baptism, though the evidence is not exact. Harald recorded his achievements on a rune stone at Jelling in Jutland, which is sometimes described as Denmark's birth certificate, and the monuments there are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Denmark is one of the oldest continuing monarchies in the world. Over the centuries the kingdom ruled Norway, parts of Sweden and, later, Iceland, Greenland and the Faroe Islands.
