1982 Lebanon War

from 6 June 1982 to 17 May 1985

The 1982 Lebanon War began when Israel invaded southern Lebanon in an operation called Peace for Galilee, with the declared aim of ending attacks by the Palestine Liberation Organization on northern Israel. The immediate trigger was the attempted assassination of the Israeli ambassador in London. Israeli forces advanced to Beirut, besieged the western part of the city, and eventually the PLO leadership and fighters were evacuated under international supervision. During this time Bashir Gemayel, the president-elect, was assassinated, and Lebanese Christian militiamen massacred Palestinian civilians in the camps of Sabra and Shatila. Israel withdrew to a security zone in southern Lebanon in 1985, which it held until 2000.
