The Kingdom of Serbia was proclaimed in the early 1880s under Milan Obrenović, after Serbia had gained full independence from the Ottoman Empire at the Congress of Berlin. The throne passed between the Obrenović and Karađorđević dynasties, and in 1903 a military coup led to the murder of King Alexander Obrenović and the return of the Karađorđević line under Peter I. The kingdom took part in the Balkan Wars, doubling its territory, and then fought on the Allied side in the First World War, suffering heavy casualties and a retreat across Albania. At the end of the war, it joined the former South Slav lands of Austria-Hungary in the new Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, later called Yugoslavia.
