Kingdom of Navarre

from 1162 to 1841

The Kingdom of Navarre was a medieval Basque kingdom on both sides of the western Pyrenees, with its capital at Pamplona. Its origins are traced to the ninth century, and it reached its height under Sancho III the Great in the early eleventh century, when his lands covered much of the Christian north of Spain. After a period when Navarre was ruled by French dynasties, it became a smaller but still independent kingdom, whose kings began to use the title King of Navarre. In 1512 Ferdinand of Aragon conquered the southern part of the kingdom, which was later joined to Castile, while the northern part, Lower Navarre, remained independent under the kings who later became kings of France, such as Henry IV.
