Crown of Aragon

from 6 August 1162 to 1 January 1715

The Crown of Aragon was a medieval and early modern composite monarchy in the northeast of the Iberian Peninsula and in the western Mediterranean. It was formed by the union of the Kingdom of Aragon with the County of Barcelona through the marriage of Petronilla of Aragon and Ramon Berenguer IV, and later included Valencia, Majorca, Sicily, Sardinia and, for a time, Naples. Each territory kept its own laws and institutions, and the Crown relied on a strong tradition of pacts between kings and parliaments. Barcelona and Valencia grew into major Mediterranean trading cities. After the marriage of Ferdinand II to Isabella of Castile, it was part of the Spanish monarchy, and its institutions were abolished by the Nueva Planta decrees after the War of the Spanish Succession.
