Kingdom of Ireland

from 1542 to 1801

The Kingdom of Ireland was created when the Irish Parliament passed the Crown of Ireland Act, declaring Henry VIII of England to be king of Ireland instead of lord of Ireland. It remained in personal union with the crowns of England and, later, Great Britain, and English control was extended through plantations, notably the Plantation of Ulster, and after the Williamite War of the 1690s Catholics were subject to penal laws. The Parliament in Dublin was subordinate to London until it gained legislative independence in 1782. After the rebellion of 1798, the Acts of Union merged the kingdom with Great Britain to form the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, which took effect at the start of 1801.
