Tirana is the capital and largest city of Albania, and its founding is traditionally dated to the early seventeenth century, when the Ottoman general Sulejman Pasha Bargjini of Mullet built a mosque, a bakery and a Turkish bath on the site, around which a settlement grew. It lay on the caravan route linking the interior with the coast. It was a modest town for centuries and became the capital only in 1920, when a national congress chose it as the seat of government of the newly independent country. During the communist dictatorship of Enver Hoxha, the city was transformed with large public buildings and housing blocks. Since the 1990s, it has been rebuilt and repainted.
