The Tsardom of Russia was the Russian state from the coronation of Ivan IV, known as Ivan the Terrible, as the first tsar, until Peter the Great adopted the title of emperor and founded the Russian Empire. In this period, Muscovy expanded east across Siberia to the Pacific and south to take in the Volga region. Ivan's reign saw the conquest of the khanates of Kazan and Astrakhan, followed by the chaos of the Time of Troubles, ended by the election of Michael Romanov in 1613, which began the Romanov dynasty. The Tsardom later took in much of Ukraine and was ruled by an assembly of nobles, the Zemsky Sobor, in some periods.
