Mary, Queen of Scots was born on 8 December 1542 in Linlithgow Palace. Queen of Scotland from the age of six days, Mary became queen after the death of her father, James V. She was sent to France as a child and married the Dauphin, later Francis II, becoming briefly queen of France. After his death she returned to Scotland, where her Catholic faith and marriage to Lord Darnley, whose murder she was suspected of arranging, stirred up opposition. She was forced to abdicate in favor of her infant son, James VI, and fled to England, where Elizabeth I held her captive for almost two decades. Implicated in the Babington Plot, she was executed at Fotheringhay Castle.
