Kingdom of Bohemia

from 1198 to 1918

The Kingdom of Bohemia was a medieval and early modern state in Central Europe, centred on the lands of the Czech crown. The Premyslid dukes were granted a hereditary royal title by the Holy Roman emperor, and the title was confirmed with the Golden Bull of Sicily in 1212. Bohemia became one of the wealthiest realms in the empire, with Prague as an imperial capital under Charles IV, who founded Charles University. The Hussite movement of the fifteenth century shook the country and the Church. In 1526 the crown passed to the Habsburgs, and after the defeat of the Czech estates at the Battle of White Mountain in 1620 it lost its autonomy. The kingdom survived in name until the end of the Habsburg monarchy in 1918.
