The Indo-Pakistani War of 1947 to 1948, also called the First Kashmir War, began soon after the partition of British India, when the ruler of the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir had not yet decided whether to join India or Pakistan. Armed tribesmen from Pakistan's frontier region entered Kashmir, and the Maharaja Hari Singh asked India for help and signed an instrument of accession to India. Indian troops were flown into Srinagar, and the regular armies of both countries became involved. The United Nations arranged a ceasefire, which left Kashmir divided along a line of control, and the dispute remains unresolved, leading to further wars.
