The Indo-Pakistani wars and conflicts are a series of confrontations between India and Pakistan that began with the partition of British India in 1947. The first war was fought over Kashmir after tribal forces entered the princely state, whose ruler acceded to India; a United Nations ceasefire in 1949 left the territory divided. A second war followed in 1965 over Kashmir, and a third in 1971 arose from the crisis in East Pakistan, when India intervened and Pakistani forces surrendered in Dhaka, leading to the creation of Bangladesh. The Kargil conflict took place in 1999, a year after both countries tested nuclear weapons. Crises such as the Mumbai attacks of 2008 have repeatedly raised tensions, and Kashmir remains the central issue.
