Hafez died in 1389 in Shiraz, aged about 64. A Persian lyric poet from Shiraz, Hafez is regarded as one of the greatest masters of the ghazal, a form of short rhymed poems. His collected poems, the Divan, mingle themes of love, wine, mysticism and sharp criticism of hypocrisy, and their layered imagery allows both spiritual and worldly readings. Many Iranians know his verses by heart, and the book is consulted for divination in the tradition called fal-e Hafez. His work was translated into European languages in the nineteenth century and inspired Goethe's West-Eastern Divan. His tomb in Shiraz is a popular place of visit.
