Hillsborough disaster

15 April 1989

The Hillsborough disaster was a fatal crush at Hillsborough Stadium in Sheffield, during an FA Cup semi-final between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest. Police opened a gate to relieve pressure outside the ground, and the resulting influx of supporters into already full central pens of the standing terrace on the Leppings Lane end led to people being crushed against perimeter fencing. Ninety-seven Liverpool supporters died, making it the worst disaster in British stadium history. Police and some media initially blamed drunken, ticketless fans, an account later shown to be false. The Taylor Report of 1990 identified police failures as the main cause and led to the introduction of all-seater stadiums, and a jury in 2016 found that the victims had been unlawfully killed.
