The Rungrado 1st of May Stadium is a large multi-purpose stadium in Pyongyang, North Korea, on Rungra Island in the Taedong River. It was opened for the 13th World Festival of Youth and Students, an international event hosted by the North Korean government. Its roof, with sixteen arches arranged like the petals of a magnolia, gives it a distinctive appearance. North Korea gives a very large seating capacity, which would make it one of the biggest stadiums in the world, although the figure cannot be independently confirmed. It is used for football matches, athletics and especially for large mass gymnastics and propaganda spectacles, such as the Arirang Mass Games.
