Happy Birthday to You

1911

Happy Birthday to You is one of the most widely sung songs in the English language. Its melody comes from a song called Good Morning to All, written by two American sisters, Mildred and Patty Hill, who were kindergarten teachers in Kentucky. The birthday words appeared in print in the early twentieth century, and by the 1930s the song was being performed widely, and a publishing company claimed the copyright. For many years the song earned large sums in royalties, and film and television productions had to pay to use it. In 2015 a United States court ruled that the claim to the copyright in the words was invalid, and the song is now treated as public domain.
