The revolution of 5 October 1910 overthrew the monarchy in Portugal and established a republic. A conspiracy by the Portuguese Republican Party and the secret society Carbonaria led to a military uprising in Lisbon, in which parts of the army and navy joined the rebels and fought troops loyal to the king. After heavy firing around the royal palace, the monarchy's supporters gave up, and the republic was proclaimed from the balcony of Lisbon's city hall. King Manuel II, who had come to the throne after the assassination of his father and brother, fled to the United Kingdom. A provisional government led by Teofilo Braga introduced new national symbols and secular reforms, and a republican constitution followed in 1911.
