Founding of New Delhi

1911

New Delhi was built as the new capital of British India, replacing Calcutta, after King George V announced the move at the Delhi Durbar. The British architects Edwin Lutyens and Herbert Baker designed the city, with a grand layout of wide avenues and government buildings, including the Viceroy's House, now Rashtrapati Bhavan, centred on a ceremonial axis. It was formally inaugurated in 1931, after years of construction. At independence in 1947, it became the capital of India, and it grew greatly with the arrival of refugees after Partition and migrants. It is part of the larger urban area of Delhi, whose history goes back many centuries, with old Delhi, the Mughal capital Shahjahanabad, lying to the north.
